There’s something so beautiful about classic, rich weaves unadorned with embroidery or embellishments. This is what Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango excels at. For Amazon India Fashion Week in New Delhi, he delivers another understated, elegant collection for Spring Summer 2016.
I am a huge fan of Sanjay Garg and Raw Mango, and have dreams of collecting new pieces each season (so far the count is one gorgeous chanderi sari). Raw Mango is a leading Indian fashion brand that beautifully marries traditional craft with contemporary sensibilities, executed with great finesse and technique. The luxurious saris and lehengas are favoured by Indian celebrities like Soha Ali Khan (who wore a lehenga from his last collection to her wedding reception), Konkona Sen Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, and Dia Mirza.
For Spring 2016, Garg looked to innovate the Mashru textile, a heritage weave that has been seldom seen since the 1940s. Mashru is traditionally created from both silk and cotton, and came to India through the silk route, with deep Ottoman and Mughal roots. This collection uses three variations of Mashru fabrics: Gulbadan, a weft faced twill fabric in zari with motifs woven on the twill base; Danedar, which involves floats of cotton weft that allow for a subtle shine to the fabric, and a pattern of small dots; and Ashrafi, a circular motif imitating gold mohur currency, and often filled with a chevron pattern. The result is a collection with simple silhouettes that let the luxurious fabric speak for itself.
